Monitor Problem

The Late: SuperMacMod
Have dual monitors, both Apple 17" Studio Displays and an ATI 8500 card. G4/1GHz.

One monitor doesn't work. Light keeps going from green to orange. Second monitor works fine on either port on the card.

Guessing the monitor went bad. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I don't know if Apple will still replace your monitor free of charge, but they did mine about 2 years ago. There's a known problem with the 17" VGA Studio Displays -- they go bad over time. Something with the electron gun arcing against something else or something.

Did your monitor exhibit any problems before this, like dimming of the screen, or "zooming" of the screen (like the electron guns were aimed too far away or too close to the screen)? Or did the monitor make any intermittent popping or crackling sounds?

Here's the Apple article on it:

Apple fixed mine for free -- sent me a box, I shipped it off, and a brand-new display was shipped back to me, free of charge, two weeks later.

Here's a discussion on it:

Thanks for that info. Called Apple and they're sending a box to ship to them and they'll repair for free.
Didn't think they'd do that. It's about 4 years old.

Thanks

No problem at all -- Apple had already released their flat-panel displays and my monitor was considered EOL by that time. They shipped me a brand-new one.

Let me know if you get a brand-new one as well or if they just fix it, will you?

Wiil do. Tech on the phone syas they'll repair it, but I'll post back when I get it back.

July 29th and I have the monitor back from Apple worrking fine. 6 days from when I made the call.

when I bought my b&w tower new in sept. 99 I got a 17" stdio display with it. about 4 months after the apple care ran out it started going screwy. for some reason they could not get parts for it and sent a box for it with a cheque for its value. I got a viewsonic with the money and have been a loyal viewsonic user ever since.

thought I would share my experience with apple. they were quick to solve the prob and make me happy even though apple care was gone. pretty amazing.
