Monitors

Hi ya all,

Just wanted to ask for some opinions on my decision to wait for the rumored new monitors.

I've been waiting all year for G5/Panther etc etc and had just made my order for my whole kit when I saw rumors of monitors changing again. I canceled the order straight away.

Nothing would bug me more than knowing I'd dropped a bundle of cash on a not so up to date monitor.

So wadda ya reckon. Am I mad to wait or should I just go for it.

Hi Franklin

Well I received my G5 Dual and 20" Cinema last week, I ordered the G5 long long time ago and couldn't be arsed waiting any longer for a new monitor, ok I will admit they're not the best together but the G5 is goin under the desk as it's such a huge (though very sexy) beast and the 20" is sitting on the desk at home, and the 20" is absolutely stunning in quality.

I would bet a bunch that Apple will be making new monitors or at least re-designing the current monitors to be more "G5-like."

The question is when, and I haven't the faintest clue, nor have I seen anywhere that speculates when.

The current monitors are tried and true, and people seem VERY satisfied with them. It's all a matter of your preference -- would you mind all that much having a monitor that doesn't match your computer?

Know what your saying El Diablo but It's the first time I've bought a mac in years and this one's got to last me a good while so I'd like to start with gear that is well paired to each other, both in looks and use.

The mouse and keyboard match more closely to the 20" cinema (white/clear plastic) than they do to the G5, again the G5 is so tall and bulky it would take up a lot of desk space so I'm putting it under the desk thus giving me more area and just plug the keyboard into the monitor, even the sensitivity of the power button on the monitor which turns on the G5 was quite impressive (you can tell I haven't had a new mac at home in a long long time) but because of renovations I put it all back in it's box and it's sitting there almost 2 weeks later, I'm itching to get stuck in with some serious photoshop and test out the video work on it.

Well, why not just wait for a dual 5ghz G6 while your at it?
But really, if you have been waiting for so long, and you have all the money at your fingertips and you need the new machine - how can you not wait? With your frame of mind, you might never buy again due to your self doubt. Go ahead! Buy a cinema display and then you can wait for the the second or third revision of monitors. Unless you buy a new monitor every time apple makes one, your gonna have an old monitor at some point. It's inevitable.

5ghz G6!!!! Really, ah sure I'll wait for that. Only messin :p

So busy at the moment I probably won't even unpack the thing till late november anyways so I'll wait till then.

Then I'll drop the cash on it, new monitors or not.

:D

I would say wait until Macworld Expo SF at the latest, and order after that, whether they reveal new displays or not.

I have yakked with a couple people about rumored new monitors, hopefully aluminum-based to match the G5's. However, the current Apple line are still excellent displays despite their age. The 3-year-old 17" and 23" models, plus the newer 20" model, are much better than most of the new LCD monitors out there right now.

Btw, are those current displays good for movies and games? By the specs their reaction-time (direct translation from german! hope you guys got it. ;)) seem a bit too high for a good movie playback...

Do you mean refresh rate? Much better than CRT's...

I've played Wolfenstein on a G4 with a 17" monitor and watched (part of) Reloaded on a G5 with a 23" monitor (both Apple), and in both scenarios the picture was clean and clear and very good.

not really refreshrate.
Ok, the time that is needed to turn a black pixel into white.
Or is it refreshrate? Ok, am not talking about those 60 or 75Hz. And I know there is no flickering like CRTs, since the background light is not flickering.
Here an example what I am actually talking about:
A too high "reactiontime" causes some kind of slight fade effects on movies or games.

But you actually answered my question. ;) Seems they are just perfect...
tnx!

...

Did you run into the little server hiccups and manage to post 3 times in a row? Or was that intentional? ;)

Hehe
arden, I got so jealous on the number of your posts, so I decided to post anything three times from now on! ;)

btw, anyone else having probs with the server or did it just get allergic to germans?

Zammy I have a 20" philips flat panel upstairs and when playing a dvd on that or watching a footy match I can see the ghosting effect or blurring effect you mention but watched revolutions on the G5 with the 20" cinema and it was the cleanest clearest movie I've watched in the house, it pi$$ed all over the normal telly watchin a dvd for clarity and refresh.
