Motorola SLVR; your opinions please

I'm considering replacing my K700i with this phone, though it has fewer features. I would only go for it only if I can use it as GPRS modem with my PowerBook, via Bluetooth. I'm having problems with the K700i in this respect; no suitable modem scripts can be found. A Mac-user friend of mine had to switch to a Windows laptop in order to utilise his K700i as a modem...
I'd like to know from users in this forum who have this phone, or have read anything abt it in respect to its functionality with Mac OSX, whether it a worthwhile purchase and whether I'll be able to use it as a GPRS modem. Thanks in advance.

the fact that it has this extra functionality, in my opinion, is no justification for putting yourself through the pain of owning a motorola. i'm nearing the end of my (thankfully short) time with the RAZR (the flip version of the SLVR, and i'm glad it's over. the only merit the phone has is that it looks nice (except i don't even think it does...). The OS is the worse OS i have ever used, in any situation. it's slow, awkward, confusing, and mostly backwards. the actualy phone is also very slow, if you type about 100-200 characters into an SMS, you will have to stop and wait for the characters to catch up with you. i'm not joking. the bluetooth is very silly to use, and you have to manually turn it on everytime you want to use it. there is, of course, no simple "Turn On Bluetooth" item. it's Menu > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > Setup > Find Me. there's no shorter way of doing it, really.

oh and the standard battery begins to lose charge after less than 6 months. and it only has 5mb of internal, non-expandable memory. your k700i is a lot better.

Can't speak from personal experience, I have heard the same thing from friends who own the Razor.

I have to respectfully disagree.... For a guy that does not like to carry a lot of stuff around (and thinks phones one belts look stupid) the RAZR hasa been a good form/function unit. My bluetooth stays on ALL THE TIME, I get in and out of the car (bluetooth equipped), use it as a modem for my Powerbook, and it all works good. I have too batteries, but almost never use the second one. One charge lasts about a day and a half of heavy use.
The only concession I will make is its PIM functions are sooo 1998. But I am not a believer in one device does all. I had a Treo 650... too big. I had several Nokia's - poor quality construction. And camera's in phones are fine for taking bad pictures of the car accident you just had, but other than that - one of the worst ideas ever. (I am sure that last comment will move me to the loony bin, but have you really ever seen a GOOD picture from a phone?)
The RAZR works well as a modem, so the SLVR should too.... its basically the same phone.

Did you have to install any extra software to get the PB to recognise your RAZR as a modem?

Razr: utter cack. The worst phone I have ever owned.
Unless they have a radical change of os, I would never get another motorola. Contact management is particularly bad. It doesn't allow me to sms from my mac, like my old (3 year old!) phone did.
bad, bad, bad.

yeah i really have to say it's not any specific things that i don't really like about the razr, more the whole experience of just "oh for f**ks sake what??" which happens at least 10 times a week, when the phone surprises you by doing something completely anti-intuitive that you could never have prepared yourself for. it's the little things. if a nokia is a mac, motorola is windows.

my friend got a razr at the same sort of time as me, and everyday we compare just how bad our phones are.

I will say I have had the Razr for a few weeks now and I like it. Maybe I don't mind the backward OS since I have had other Motorola's in the past and am used to it. I did have an LG before the Razr and I found the lack of support for Mac to be an issue.

I will agree there are some things that could be better on the RAZR. quite frankly I haven't found one phone that does everything I would like how I would like. (Probably because they are too busy adding crap like streaming media and cameras to phones)

I had to install one shim to get the phone to work via Bluetooth for isync, but that was painless and is working well.

The only thing I like about my Razr is that it looks good. The rest, for me, is utter cack.
