Mounted drives disappear from desktop

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.8. We connect to our Apple Server OS X 10.5.8 thru AFP using the 'Connect to Server' The mounted share drive will initially show up on the desktop as the icon. A few minutes later when I want to see a file on that server, I will double click on that icon, it then disappears and doesn't open up the window. I then go to the finder and it shows in that window as still being connected. Steps that were performed to troubleshoot this issue are: I removed it from the log in items from the account properties, I removed the finder.plist file, ran disk utility to clean up any corrupted files etc. Rebooted my MBP. Then went back and reset Finder Preferences to show 'connected servers' on the desktop. Then went to add it to my log in items for my account. All this above troubleshooting issues has not fixed my issue. The icon still disappears from my desktop after a period of time lapse but still shows in the finder. Anybody have more suggestions, please let me know. Thank you very much!
