mouse mind of it's own

uhhh yeah.
so my mouse sometimes flies around on it's own. i have 10.1.4.
is this some stupid hack the i accidentally downloaded?

The mouse basically gets sucked into the dock at random times (i have to be moving the cursor)
Once it's "sucked" it is hard to pull out, like a friggin event horizon or something.

it also sometimes dances around from one side of the screen to another.

Basically, it sucks.

Thankssss

apple optical mouse, apple keyboard, 10.1.4 (did it on other versions too)
g4 dual 500
832 mb ram
ipod, cdrw drive (firewire) plugged in
no other input devices installed or plugged in

i have that problem too but i worked out a solution.

grab an a4 piece of paper and slide it under your mouse :)

you need a mousemat by the looks of things, mine slides around like crazy on my desk when i dont have a mousemat and my desk is just polished timber.

once trying the makeshift mousemat/paper solution i never had the problem again

It's all optical mouses that do that. Both of my Logitec optical mouses do it, one on my Mac(OSX, OS9) and the other on my PC(windoze 2000).

well OSX IS at fault! I know it.

Actually I've always had a fairly regular surface until now, I got a new desk.

I thought it was something technical since I just reinstalled the whole OS. So i'll try this. Now if only I could find a piece of paper...

Thanks, from Professor Obvious

I use the optical pro mouse by Apple and the cursor used to jump around when I use it and sometimes the cursor sticks to an area. I think the fault was with my mousepad. My mousepad was a semi-reflective plastic surface with a red/orange/black landscape printed on it. I think the picture on my mousepad confused the optical mouse so I stopped using it and it's fixed. I just use the bare desk without a pad and it works fine. does that sound nutty?

The same thing happened to me. I taped down a peice of paper where I use my mouse. If it keeps doing it, check for dust.

If OS X is at fault, then so must be OS 9, and probably all versions of Windows.

The real problem is that the mouse is getting confused due to the surface it's on and sends confusing signals to the computer, making the mouse pointer move all over the place.

This is proven by others that have posted, when they placed a piece of paper under their mouse and the problem went away.

I use the stack of spare paper for the printer as a mouse pad, because the mouse goes black because of the crap that's stuck to my INCREDIBLY OLD desk. it's way too high for a computer desk too. I really need to get my old man to let me move it into my room....
