Move settings and prefs to other computer?

Tjao!
I will now change my G3/400 B&W to a G4 Quicksilver! Both with system 10.2.8.

Now:
On the G3 I have sendmail and lots of settings, prefs and apps etc. that I would like to transfer to the G4 so I don't have to do everyting again.

How and CAN I do that in a simple way?

- Backup (and restore) the library folders in your user's home folder and in the root folder.
- Make sure you use a technique that will grab any dot-hidden files when backing up your home folder. Some software (especially fink-installed / open-source unix derived software) uses dot-hidden files in your home folder to store settings.
- If you have any customised services (web, mail, samba, etc) then back up the /etc folder.

Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your entire system from one drive to another, but it's not recommended to copy the system of one computer to another as there are parts that are hardware-specific. However, you can use CCC to copy hidden files.

BTW, did you mean "ciao?" ;)

So when i jump to Panther, I can use CCC to copy my prefs and library, or should i prepare to reenter any serials that require, since my apps are on a different partition?

I really don't know, I've never used it. Bobw would be a better person to ask, he sounds like he knows his way around CCC.

Wow, CompUSA, does that sound scary to anyone other than me? I hope our Apple store opens on time and has Panther, because thats where i plan to get it.

Ask the guys at CompUSA

Hold on, I gotta get back up off the floor, then see if I can stop laughing. May have to change pants :)

You're ALWAYS better off taking the time to install your applications from their original disks rather than transferring from another machine.

I don't use Sendmail, so I don't know where it stores mail, or settings. Look in the User>library
User>library>preferences
User>documents.

Someone else will come along that uses Sendmail and tell you.

If you post a list of what settings, preferences, you want to transfer, we'll help.

LOL, I've met maybe 1 guy at CompUSA who really knew what he was talking about with regards to Macs.

I like MicroCenter, but there stuff is over priced. They gave me insight on installing a new hard drive many years ago.

Hmm!
You are leaving the subject boy's ;)

I think I will just switch the HD's between the G3 to the G4 and see if it starts, and then just wait seven days more to install Panther ontop and maybe that will fix some compatible problems :/

Any objections? :)

By the way, is the RAM the same for G3/400 B&W and he G4 Quicksilver?

Do not do this. These computers have different hardware configurations and require different disk drivers. You will cause more problems than you solve.

Hmm!

So my best bet will be CCC and then upgrade to Panther then?

(But even if I switch Harddrives I can always switch them back if it's not working)

Well, you can switch the drives, but then your computers just won't work correctly (if at all). Continue at your own risk.

Some good news!

I switched the Harddrive from G3 to G4. The G4 started and worked just fine. Then I upgraded to Panther and everything works as a charm :D

I Love Panther :)
