Moved and got a new modem but can't connect anymore

Hi,

I have been trying to resolve this problem by myself for the last 5 days (by googling and reading forums) but nothing works so here I am.

I moved last Tuesday and everything worked fine until that day. Since I am in my new apartment, I can't connect to the Internet.
Here is more info:
-I have a new modem since I moved (the apartment where I was living before was furnished and already had a modem). However, I am using the same service provider and modem than the apartment I was subletting.
-I only have a modem (no additional router) and I use the Ethernet to connect. Built in Ethernet is checked and on top in the network port configurations. DHCP is also slected and I clicked the renew button several times.
-I am writing this message from a PC laptop which confirms that the modem is working fine and that the ethernet cable is fine, etc.
-I did many rounds of shutting down the computer, renew DHCP, unplugging the modem (from 1 minute to 10 hours) and plugging everything back (in different order).
-I have the self assigned IP address (169.xxx) since I can't get one from the ISP...
-I called the ISP but they could not help (they just repeated the same instructions that I could find in the guide)...

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Julie

So you have DSL? If this is the case, then, unlike cable, DSL is not plug-and-play. Each telephone line used for DSL must have filters inserted to condition the signal. This is a job for a telephone technician. You need to call your ISP so that it can schedule a visit.

OK. When asking for help, you should volunteer as much information as possible so that we don't spend several cycles asking and answering questions about your setup. Describe your setup:
  • What do you have connected directly to your DSL modem?
  • Do you have a router? What kind? How is it configured?
  • Which devices work properly?
  • Which do not?

Sorry for not being precise enough, I did try tough.
1) My Macbook, the electricity wire and the internet wire.
2) Nothing else than the Motorola modem (can it be a router and a modem altogether?)
3) Macbook: I could connect to the Internet last Tuesday morning (before I moved) with a Motorola modem but this last modem was not mine ( was subletting a fully furnished flat). I bought the same modem from the same ISP and I am now using that one in my new flat since Tuesday night. So to recap:
-Macbook with modem of the furnished flat I was living in up until a few days ago (and everywhere else I used it before): can get online.
-Macbook with the new modem where I live since Tuesday night: can't get online.
-PC with the new modem where I live since Tuesday night: can get online.
Modem: well it works fine as well since I can get to the internet with my work laptop (PC).

Hope its clearer :)

Seems strange that the PC works but not the Mac. What internet settings do you have on the PC? Did you try entering those same settings in the Mac?

When I moved it took DSL almost 15 days to connect my account to the new place. Of course they did not tell me that I could use dial up to access my emails.

Well, it is not a lot clearer, but I think I understand. If I understand correctly, then the thing that jumps out is that you are swapping your modem between your Mac and PC.

When you want to access the Internet from your Mac after using accessing it from your PC:
  • Power-down the modem.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Power-up the modem. This forces the modem to get a new IP-address.
If this works, then you will have to repeat it every time you return Internet access to your Mac. You really ought to get a router if you want to access the Internet from both of your computers.

If this does not work, then you may not have the correct settings in your Mac. DSL ISPs commonly use the PPPoE protocol. If your ISP uses PPPoE, then you need to check your settings to ensure that they are entered properly:
  • Launch System Preferences.
  • Click the Network preferences pane.
  • Select the Show: Built-in Ethernet menu item.
  • Click the PPPoE tab.
  • Check Connect using PPPoE.
  • Enter your account settings.
If this does not work, then you may simply go through your network settings on your PC, write them down, and copy them to your Mac. Also your ISP's technical support web pages will give you everything except your account name and password.

Well, not exactly. I used my Mac from Tuesday (day I moved and started to used the new modem) till Saturday. I made test with the PC over the week end to see if the problem was the modem or ethernet or the Mac. So the problem is not coming from the fact that I siwtched between the two...I just used the PC after 4 days...

Power up and down the mode: I probably tried close to 20 times (unplugging 1 minute to 20 minutes to a whole night). The Mac could never find the IP address anyways.

ISP: I called them but the documentation their 'tech people' is having is the exact same than the one they gave me (they just go through the steps with you and can't provide extra information).

My ISP is using DHCP (automatic) so they said they can't give me any IP address to try...

So I already covered all these options...

My problem has finally been resolved! Someone from another forum got the right suggestion (and I did call Apple Care earlier today and they never found the problem...they suggested me to call Motorola). I entered the DNS I was seeing from the PC in the Mac settings and voilà! it worked :)
