Moving a users account to a new mac

What is the simplest way to move all of a users settings, preferences, mail etc to a new mac? Should I delete the user from the old mac, saving their files as a .dmg in Deleted Users and then copy that file? And when I have copied the file across and reset up the user on the new mac can I simply replace all of their existing home directory with the contents of the dmg?
