Mozilla Question!

In my never ending quest to rid myself of those unsightly animated GIF advertisements riddling nearly every website on the internet, I discovered that Mozilla has an Image Manager under the Tools menu. This REALLY COOL feature allows me to block images from certain websites. When I try to block images from Versiontracker.com, the images load anyway. Is this a bug in Mozilla or is something else going on here? I'm specifically interested in loading webpages faster on some sites. I simply don't need to see stupid advertisements. I know that this is how sites make money, but they can make money off of the other 95% of the population who use M$ Internet Exploder. Any suggestions?

Which version of Moz are you using? If it's the 1.1a, that may be a bug. I've noticed quite a few bugs in it already since it's not really an official version. It sounds like you tried reloading the page after having the images be blocked too, so that doesn't sound like it would be a problem. I just checked VT and it looks like they're ads are coming from some kind of sub server called spinbox. Although there occasionally seems to be one ad from the nasty double click. If you're using 1.1a, try to do it in 1.0 or vice versa and see if that yields any results. Also, try to block an ad or something at some other website and see if it works for that site. A lot of these sites use similar ad companies so it may block the ads at other sites you visit as well automatically.

I'm using version Mozilla 1.0. I just went through the preferences and specified that images can only load from the originating server. But that still doesn't work. When I block ALL images from ALL sites, then images NEVER load. But I only want to exclude a few sites. I noticed that even on MacCentral.com that images load from spinbox.versiontracker.com. Hmm...

OK, here's how to block all those unsightly animated advertizing GIF images in Mozilla:

1. Most websites get their images from another server. In the case of http://www.versiontracker.com, it gets its advertizing GIF images from spinbox.versiontracker.com.

2. As a webpage loads, find the images that you don't want to see ever again.

3. Control-click (or Right-click if you have a 3-button wheel mouse) on the image. A contextual menu will appear. Select Block Images from this Server.

4. In the extreme case of preventing images from loading altogether from a website, go to the Tools menu, then select Image Manager, then select Block Images from this Site.

5. In the Preferences, click on Privacy & Security, then click on Images. You can now specify much more control of images from websites. Animated GIFs can be set to no cycling, and images can be loaded only if originating from the original server.

Enjoy your new found freedom from flashy distracting graphics that waste your time.
