MPEG4 video problems & fix

I thought I should share a problem with QuickTime's ability to play MPEG4 video (not audio) and the new EyeTV MPEG component introduced with the new EyeTV v1.7.1. I found after using the EyeTV 1.7.1 a new QuickTime component was installed in Library(main Library folder)->QuickTime. This is where new video components are added to enhance QuickTime's video playback ability. The results was a completely green QuickTime player window when playing any MPEG4.

After some searching, I went through the Applications->Utilties->Console logs and did some hard thinking. I thought the problem might be caused by the new EyeTV QuickTime component. I thought this because this was the newest QuickTime component that was installed. After removing the EyeTV MPEG Quicktime component, Quicktime had no problem playing MPEG4 videos again. HOWEVER, I noticed through watching the Console logs, even though the QuickTime player was playing MPEG4 video (and audio) an older component installed in the Library->QuickTime component folder. The component handling the MPEG4 video was called 3iVX D4, not by the Apple Quicktime MPEG4 component (that is installed by default in System->Library->QuickTime folder). I had installed it months ago.

So I removed the 3ivx D4 component (from Library->QuickTime) and now QuickTime could again playback MPEG4 video with the EyeTV MPEG component installed. The Console log reported the Apple MPEG4 component was again handling the QuickTime players ability to play MPEG 4 video.

Now, you may ask why I chose the course of removing the 3iVX QuickTime component and not just revert to an older EyeTV package that does not use the new EyeTV MPEG Quicktime component. I thought that I would trust Apple's ability to play MPEG4 video, not 3ivx. Also, Elgato released the 1.7.1 update so people could export MPEG4 video recordings.

I also noticed something a little strange about the 3ivx D4 QuickTime component. I caused a slight, very high pitched whine in my Ati Radeon X800 video card. Now with the 3ivx Quicktime component removed, the ATI video card did not make the high pitched whine anymore. Also, Apple's QuickTime MPEG4 component was once again the video component handling QuickTime's Player MPEG4 playback.

I notified Elgato and 3ivx of my findings. Maybe in the future either company will update their respective QuickTime component so they will play nice with each other.

I thought maybe someone here could use this information.
