A new update for MS Office has been posted. Time to download this and fix the bugs in Office. This update seems to add some added security features, and should be quite welcome. TheInquirer made a big deal out of it, but it seems to be really a non issue.

Here's the update's read me.

yeah cool. update crappy office.

but i read somewhere that theres a security hole in excel. dont know if this fixes it.

microsucks rules :)

How is the stability so far, Viro? I kicked out ms office 2004 because it had a lot of "systematical" crashes. Is the update valid for the test version of ms office 2004 as well?

Good to see you Zammy. You been away or something?

Office 2004 seems fine for me so far. Been using it for about 3 months and there hasn't been any crashes. Then again, perhaps I don't stress it out enough :).

Yeah, am happy to be back again. Had been in Croatia for 2 weeks without any kind of internet connections down there. Quite a tough time. Especially because of not seeing you guys..
I had frequent crashes when I worked with two different excel files at the same time (like changing sheets and data of one file and switch to the other open file) and word didn't like the apple works graphics anymore beside many crashes. Any way for me to test it? Is the ms office 2004 test drive also updated?

So far seem stable to me on Word, Excel and Entourage (haven't used powerpoint yet), installed a few hours ago. It supposedly stops the dock icon for entourage bouncing when it receives an error, which would be deeply useful as that little b*****d is constantly distracting me when i'm working. Also, seems to have made printing from Word work again, as for some reason it had been refusing to see any printers for the last 2 months, forcing me to print via pdf.

And also, welcome back Zammy!

I don't think they've updated the Test drive. Can't seem to find any mention of it anywhere, so I guess they probably haven't.

I've been happy with Office 2004 so far, barring the glaring omission of Kerberos support in Entourage, as well as a few other little things here and there. I installed the service pack and haven't really noticed any performance or reliability improvements, but I wasn't having too many to begin with, so YMMV.

The Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac service pack 1 (11.1.0) includes the following improvements for Word 2004 for Mac:

•
AutoRecover functions correctly when FileVault is enabled Previously, setting the AutoRecover folder location to a location inside a FileVault-protected home folder did not work. This has been fixed. FileVault is an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 128-bit keys that secures your home folder by automatically encrypting the contents. For more information about FileVault, see Apple Help.

•
Security is improved when you open a document that has macros Word X for Mac, Excel X for Mac, and PowerPoint X for Mac now support an additional level of security that affects macros that open other Office documents containing macros. You can use the Application.AutomationSecurity property to set the level of security desired.
For additional information about the Application.AutomationSecurity property, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

•
Text changes to the font selected on the Font menu In some cases, a font change did not take effect when you used the Font menu. This happened when the WYSIWYG font and the style menus check box was cleared in Preferences, and then the Font menu was used to change the font of text in a document. This issue has been fixed. The text now changes to the font that you select in the Font menu.

•
German proofing tools are correctly detected Previously, the Compatibility Report in Word X for Mac erroneously reported that the Swiss German proofing tools are not installed. This issue has been fixed. Text marked as Swiss German text is proofed using the German proofing tools, which are installed by default. The Compatibility Report no longer reports this issue.

•
Text selection is improved Previously, when you double-clicked a word to select it, and then dragged the selection to include more words, Word X for Mac sometimes selected the preceding word in addition to the words you selected. This issue has been fixed. Word no longer selects the word preceding the word you select.
