I'm torn between buying which model is best for me.

What would you do if you were in my situation?

Will use it for everything except for gaming, the M$ PC will be used for that. Heavy use will focus on video editing mainly, digital images and daily productivity stuff. (using iApps except Final Cut Express)

I know the G5 is the easy answer but it may be overkill or just $$$ spent unwisely. Thanks in advance for your input!

I'm having the EXACT same problem. This is the way I see it...I do video, but nothing too heavy. The G5 starts @ 1999, the iMac @ 1799 (I predict we'll see a price drop, as the G4 Powermacs are now so cheap)...but to add a 17 inch cinema display (not widescreen) to the G5 is another $700. For that price, I can buy a perfectly serviceable iMac with a better screen, that for all practical purposes is as powerful as the G5. I mean, do I REALLY need a 1.6 ghz G5 to do word processing or web surfing? It may come in handy in FCP and iMovie, but in my case, I dont feel it's worth the extra $. The Powermac is a pro-machine, the iMac is a consumer machine. In my case, the G5 is overkill. I'd definately buy one for a cheaper price, but why spend an extra $900 when an iMac will serve my needs just fine? And like I said, I have a feeling we're gonna see a nice iMac price drop.

I would go even for a G4-based PowerMac if money isn't a problem instead of iMac for games, video, etc. But if you can wait couple of months G5 may be overkill in the months ahead but not so in years ahead :D ;)

Boom! :D ;) :)

Then it boils down to, like always, need vs. want and the $$$.....your suggestion makes a lot of sense down the road (years) & also Daltu1983's with what you intend to run on the system, ...My next question is what is the average lifespan for Mac systems, (3-5 years?) considering how often Apple updates their h/w & s/w?

I upgrade every year or 2. So I can buy my iMac, have $1,000 left in the bank, and start saving up for a dual 2ghz when they're clearing them out to make way for the new ones.

My iMac is almost an appliance. I use it for a stereo, a TV (DVD player and EyeTV), a speakerphone, an alarm clock, etc. I'm into video, but for the price premium of a G4 Powermac (even though they're only 1400ish now, you still need a display. And a widescreen LCD display is freaking expensive. So my movies take a few minutes longer to render. I'll pocket my cash, and in a year or 2, buy a rev B or C G5. For games, I can hook my playstation up to my eyeTV and play on my Mac.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Okay, the maxed out 17" iMac it is then...Yesterday was my last day to return it and for +$1300 more, I think I'd be spending the extra cash on iSight, ElGato eyeTV (How do you like this anyway?), a huge LaCie external FireWire drive and Soundsticks with plenty $$ left over....and get the G5 when the new models come out. Woohoo!!!

ah eye tv sucks if u try to connect ur ps2 in it because it takes the comp a few seconds to respond. For example if i connect it then press the x button seconds later is when the comp shows i pushed the buttom whichs is was too slow to play any game.

Well, it sounds as if the decision is made, and I have to agree. I'd go with SuperDrive for video editing, and the extra accessories and spare cash don't hurt either.
