My computer dials in before giving me a login screen?

OK... first off I have no clue what I have done to get my B&W G3 to do this, maybe some of you guys have some insight.

My computer dials into my ISP before bringing up any authentication screen, be it my screen saver or my login after the computer boots. It won't even show me the authentication screen untill the computer is connected to the internet. That was all fine and dandy after I turned off my pass protect on my screensaver. now for some reason it's dialing every couple minutes.

Like I said, I have no clue what's causing this, I have websharing, Appletalk, filesharring, software update, and network time server turned off and absolutely no programs are running except finder. While away at college I installed that broadband optimizer but when I came back home I took it out of the startup folder.

Does anybody have any reasoning why it would do this?

nope, no aftermarket software at all. That's what I don't understand. It is something within Mac OS itself requiring me to dial up.

"My computer dials into my ISP " do you mean you connect to the internet? If that is what you mean, I also had that problem, what I did to fix that is: Start up System Pref>Network>Modem> and there is a check box that says something like automaticly connect to "internet?" when starting up TCP/IP application. I am not sure if that is exactly what it says, I am sitting at a piece of crap wintel box at school. Anyway, just click it off.

Yea, the box you're speaking of is the "connect automaticaly when starting TCP/IP applications." Right now I do have it checked, If I don't have this selected it will still try to connect before it gives me the logon screen.

If you're having the same problem that I'm having apple should really get their act together... not all people want to dial up everytime they get on their computer. I'm thinking somewhere, something is corrupted or I have the wrong option selected. At first I thought it may have been a setting in netinfo. I looked around thinking that I had shadow passwords or something set up with a trusted domain. That wasn't the case. I'm completely baffled with this one.

you have appletalk and file sharing turned off. what about the applications choices in sharing prefs? are either of those checked to allow?

well... turning that option off in the sys. prefs. worked for me. For now, all you can do is pull the cord from your mac when you start up into ten.

Check under Date & Time in sys prefs. on the Network tab is "Use a network time server" checked, as that would explain it because it syncs on bootup.

Sorry for not checking back in sooner but I've been away from home for a few weeks.

All of the above are turned off, appletalk, filesharring, time server... EVERYTHING I could possibly think of.

I have found a connection between the username/pass screen that comes up on my computer. it dials both on boot and on screensaver authentication, as well as whenever it asks me to authenticate to make system updates. the 10.1.2 update did not help whatsoever. I'm completely out of ideas and unfortunately I can't reinstall because my X CD is located in my dorm room... which I can't get into till January 16th!

I'm goin nuts here!
