My iBook won't read my external optical drive...

I'm really stumped. It worked fine until I upgraded to 10.3.8 but now my iBook (it an older 12" 700Mhz G3) isn't detecting the external Que! Drive. I've tried installing different burn programs: Dragon Burn (which is what came with the drive and usually works), to MissingMedia, and BurnX Free. Oddly pressing an eject command in any of those programs ejects the disc in the external drive, but the programs won't register the existance of the drive.

Help?

It really annoys me because Staples can't read by USB key either so there doesn't seem to be anyway to transfer the image files off my iBook. I'll be up all night trying to work this out.
 
I used to have a not working Que USB drive,and someone said the firmware is not compatible with OSX 10.3...,(don't know the details) but maybe something to check into?
