My LCD monitor keeps saying out of range

My LCD monitor keeps saying out of range, so I unplug it. Even when I unplug it my MacBook Pro thinks it is still plugged in and I can drag my windows to the right of the screen as if there was an imaginary monitor. I know the monitor is fine b/c I used to use it with a PC flawlessly all the time. It does work with my macbook pro sometimes, it just says out of range most of the time. Even restarting my mac doesn't resolve this issue. I think it is something with the video card. How can I "reset" the video card drivers or what should I do to fix this?
