My mac and mic

I have jaguar and just bought a mic for my agp g4 400mhz tower. I pluged it in the mic port on the back but under the sound pane when i try to test the mic, the bar that indicates the level of sound the bar doesnt move. I have it all the way up and still nothing. Under the external pane it does come up that i have a external mic and let me select that option but no sound. Please i hope you can help me.
 
On the box it said it was actually made for IBM Viavoice. But i think Viavoice now wants a usb mic. But the instructions said to just plug them in to the port. IM lost
 
Anyone with a mic working under osx jaguar want to post the name here? I guess ima buy a new one made for jaguar. I Want to talk through yahoo to someone.
 
mics for PCs do not work on Macs... Its a whole different type of mic. Been like this forever, kinda sucks.
 
But i just tried it on a pc and it works great. The box said mac compatable. Im lost. It even said compatable with via voice for mac. It was 15 bucks but i dont understand why it doesnt work in my mac. I am going to check the mic input.
