Never ever install or run nortans software on a Mac, it causes more issues than solves.

you may have screwed the OS

Start up the mac in single user mode, hold down the shift key.
see if the mac boots.
If it boots, go to users and find your logon profile. Rename it, restart the mac, login normally, can you login? If you can uninstall the nortans software, dragging it to trash, prefs as well.

If you can't login, find the install disk, restart holding down c key, in the setup, under tools run the disk utilty, repaire the permissions.

restart, login.

As a first step, I'd remove Norton Antivirus. Read here for some details.

Second, try repairing disk permissions by following trooper's advice above. You shouldn't need to boot into single-user mode until you've done some more basic checking.

I agree though, Norton software has caused many well-documented problems on OS X. Perhaps there are Norton enthusiasts here who can share other experiences (even positive ones! Not that I've heard any).

Norton sux on PC as well. It's a resource hog and a nuissance. I'm new to OSX, but I was under the impression you couldn't get viruses with it?

Any complicated operating system is susceptible to viruses and other bad guys; see here for a recent discussion about this. That having been said, I don't think anyone on these boards will argue that anti-virus software is currently worth the money and resources on OS X. The best protection, for now, is to keep your system up to date, and keep your wits about you.

thanks guys did try to unistall nortans "but" it all went pair shaped from that point on during my unistalling the mac froze soa i restarted to continue and now its not booting up at all ......tried the disk utility got a error "the underlying task reported failure on exit " (-9972) any suggestion cause in on the fifth floor and am willing to through it out the window lol other that that there is a grey screen with icon ? flashing

I assume that you booted up from the OS X disc and ran Disk Utility from there. Did you run "Verify Disk"? Just curious.

There are several options left still, if you have the patience (or if you have no other choice but to fix the problem). If I were you, I'd buy a copy of DiskWarrior and try to repair the disk from there. As an interim step, you can also run the Hardware Test that comes on your OS X disk -- see the document "Apple Hardware Test Readme.pdf" on the disk for more details.

thanks bil.... you assumtions was correct ..i did run verify and the same error appeared ...ill get a copy of disk warrior and give that a bash thanks again will give feedback ....
