My mother in law forget her system password

If I take it to the Apple Store can a tech there figure it out or do we have to reinstall.

Reset the password yourself:
Boot to your installer DVD
Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
And, reset the password!
Then, quit that utility, and also quit the installer, as you don't need to reinstall at this point.
