My Powerbook gets to hot

After my upgrade to OS X 10.5.5 I have the problem that my CPU only uses 20-30% but still gets very hot, and finally my computer shuts down.

I have iStats Pro that also shows that both of my fans is working and going crazy spinning up to 6000 rpm just because the CPU is 75° C.

Anybody experience the same problem? Any suggestions?

It's possible that the goo that holds the heatsink on the processor might have dried up & loosened. It could explain the symptoms at least. If you're very patient and twice as careful, powerbooks aren't very hard to take apart. It may be worth looking at ifixit.com/guide to see if you think it would be worth your time & effort to investigate.

heat sink goo can be bought at any computer specialty store for a buck or two.

I will second that recommendation--for the goo.

Also, consider a cooling plate.

Kept my Widdle Old Pismo cool when I upgraded the processor to a G4 550. My current MacBook seems to have effective fans--but I still use the plate.

Oh! That is just a plate you put under your laptop! Most plug into your USB, but I bought a power cord for mine! :)

Give me a second and I will get you a pickie.

Here is an example:

Looks fancy.

Google "laptop cooling plate" for online ideas. Most computer stores--including second-hand--will sell them. Cost about $30 though you should be able to get them cheaper.

Ahh I have a cooling plate / stand, but without fans. I could not stand the noise. But thanks any way :)
