My quest to rid my computer of MS

The Office package is sucking me in, and I want out. Word can be replaced by AppleWorks, but if anyone can name a better OS X native word processor that is compatible with MS Word .docs I'd like to hear it.

Harder for me, is replacing Entourage/Outlook. I'd really like a better email client, but don't know where to look. Eudora was not the answer. Either it does not show attatchments, or I was just unable to figure it out...

Are you de-MSing your mac because it's Microsoft, or because you honestly don't use those apps?

I mean, if it's only because it's MS, it's pretty pathetic. I mean, Office actually is a fairly useful set of apps. And as far as MS apps go, it was well written (in comparison ;) )

But, of course, it's your choice.

Appleworks and Apple's Mail App is my form of attack... There are a couple (2?) of other M$ Office replacements coming.
I just wish I could use StarOffice tho! :(

I'm also completly purging my Mac from M$ - my PeeCees are different story... one of them is getting sacraficed and is going to have Windows XP Pro soon. But doubt It'll ever have Office XP. :p

I would say that the only thing I miss from M$ is Access - but they never had a Mac version, and I am now using MySQL so I don't miss it at all! (plus I have it on the PC) :D

Hypernate, wait till your computer gets hosed because of M$'s fault, you might think different then. If I could only sue M$ for time and money I've spent and lost because of downtime due to their products...

But hey - I don't totally hate M$ - they're the reason I have clients coming to me again and again! Some eventually ask why I don't use a PC for my Business/Design/School work. I have to contain myself from busting out laughing when they ask this as their PC is on my test/repair bench! ;) :D

For my purposes, the Adobe Design Collection does everything I do, but I don't even know how to work a database or spreadsheet. From what I gather, AppleWorks is a fine program, as is Corel's office suite. By the way, hasn't ANYONE ported StarOffice to Mac OS X yet? It would seem that a simple recompile would be all that was needed. Well, that and and X windowing system, which we now seem to have in spades.

de-M$-ifying for the sake of de-M$-ifying is kinda weird. I dont have to buy M$ office cause my work provides it for free. I find entourage to be VERY good. I love the OS X mail client but it cant compete yet. We want more features apple ;)

As for word processing, I could use anything, of course to just be an open standard prick, I send PDFs to people that send me .doc files hehehehe :D

Yeah, I am de-MSing because it's MS. I once said "for every MS product there is an equal or better product to get from someone else"...well, I want to put myself to the test.
Entourage seems to be my biggest challenge. I have yet to find another mail-client that can read html-code and don't have bugs.

I see nothing wrong with de-MSifying for the sake of it just being because they're MS.

They are an evil, monopolistic company with balls-in-the-vice-grip licence agreements that you agree to every time you give money to Mr. Gates.

If you feel that funding illegal activities such as Monopolies is wrong, then rid yourself of Microsoft and don't look back. There's nothing wrong with that.

So don't send them money :>
I have & use Office v.X
I wish i could use something else, but the remains:
90%+ of the world uses Office files

i was asked by someone for a word version of a file, after i sent her a pdf.

AppleWorks although good, does NOT have the
features of Office.

Mail.app is NOT comparable to Entourage.

Microsoft = bad.
Microsoft products = bad.
The world uses Microsoft products
does that mean then, that
World = bad

Yes.

Ok No, just f*ckin with ya. anyways. if you have it, and you paid for it, i pity you. if you have it and didnt pay for it, good for you!

they may not be perfect, but if you have used the Windows versions, they are SO much worse, and there are even LESS alternatives.

thats my two cents.. err. dollars.
