Mysterious data transfer blocks bandwidth

Hi folks,
I've recently been having a weird problem. Intermittently my DSL seems to go dead. My iMac can't connect to the net, neither can my iPad, iPhone or VoIP phone. I've noticed there is massive data transfer through the router causing very fast blinking lights. I thought my router was shot...so I purchased an Airport Extreme...using my old router just as a DSL modem. But the problem persists. If I shut my iMac down the problem stops...so I installed Little Snitch to monitor network activity. During the weird data transfer there was no network activity on the iMac. I've run an antivirus...nothing found.
Sometimes this happens once a day for maybe 30 mins, sometimes a large part of the day.
Anyone got any ideas where to look?

Cheers

I think your first step is to change your wireless network password.

Or, if you don't have security turned on, it's time to do that now!
