NEC ND3550 DVD+/-RW not mounting via USB

Right after opening up my brand new Mac Mini 1.66 Intel Core Duo with 1GB RAM, I plugged in my NEC ND3550 DVD+/-RW and it showed up perfectly. I burned a few discs and then all of a sudden the system froze while initiating a write to the drive.

Then, after rebooting, it would give me Error Code 0x80020025 and seemed to suddenly think that my DVD+/-RW drive was actually a hard drive, and would not recognize it as a DVD+/-RW.

I troubleshot like this:

- connected a hard disk to the external enclosure and it worked
- connected an LG DVD-ROM drive to the external enclosure and it workred
- connected an older model NEC DVD+/-RW to the external enclosure and it worked
- connected the NEC ND3550 to a Windows machine and it worked
- tried multiple plugs with three different cables but no change
- successfully connected other USB devices to the original USB slot, and they worked
- restored Mac OSX using the restore discs, with no change

Then I kind of gave up. I put the drive into my older Windows PC and had the idea to flash it to its original firmware. I did this, connected it again via the USB encloser to the Mac Mini, and voila! It worked!...

... for about an hour. The the exact same error message started popping up and the system will again not mount the drive.

I tried using PatchBurn 4.0.1 but since the drive will not mount, I cannot select it and change any of its properties.

Is this drive even compatible with the current OSX 10.4.7?

Please help! This is extremely frustrating and is not making my long-awaited "switch" from Windows to Mac a pleasant experience.
