Need Advice on Installing External Hard Drive

Hello.

I just purchased a new Seagate 250 GB external Firewire hard drive for use with my iMac. I have a few questions:

One is that I would like to know exactly what it is I need to do to get my computer to recognize it.

The other is I would like to know which drive I should install Tiger on. I already have it installed on my iMac but it only has a 10 GB hard drive. Add in the programs for it and almost half of my drive is taken up. My computer is starting to get really slow.

If I decide to install Tiger on my external could someone give me a walkthrough on how to do it without losing any items I currently have on my iMac? What is the best option for what I would like to accomplish?

Thank you for your time.

The only thing you need to get your iMac to recognize the drive is a firewire cable. When you first plug it in, the drive'll need to be formatted (stick with the default format, extended & journaled)

Keep Tiger on the internal drive. If you have an iMac with a 10gb hard drive, chances are it'll be pretty slow no matter what you do, due to its age.

If you install Tiger on the external, go through the process as normal, just make sure you select the external drive when installing! When you're done, reboot from the drive and run Migration assistant to import your complete users & applications from your iMac.

Or, on the simpler tip, get SuperDuper! and clone your internal drive onto the external using the simple interface. Couldn't be easier.

01. To format the external hard disk drive, hdd, use 'Disk Utility' (/Applications/Utilities/).

02. To duplicate the iMac's internal hdd's contents to the FireWire hdd, consider 'SuperDuper!' or 'Carbon Copy Cloner'. Both are freeware.

By the '10 GB' hdd description, it appears you have an iMac (Bondi Blue) through iMac (early 2001). If so, replacing the internal hdd is possible; but, some models may allow only up to 130 GB capacity hdds. Any hdd larger in capacity, will still be formatted only up to 130 GB.

Guys!

I used SuperDuper! to copy my Mac HD to the Seagate. However, when I go into System preferences and restart from the Seagate, I get nothing but a blank screen!

Your help is much appreciated.
