Need help in achieving a two colomn layout of text in XHTML/CSS

Greetings!

I have attached an image of what I am looking for. The second column has text that is longer than in the first. However no matter what method I use, the extra text from the second column moves under the first. I tried using min heights for the left column -- but then stuff below would get misaligned. I guess I am trying to achieve the effect in the image I posted. It seems that it should be so simple -- yet it is quite the puzzle!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
