Need Help re-installing OS X on a Macbook Pro

I'm hoping someone can help me...my Macbook Pro crashed and after trying all of the usual efforts I took it to the local Apple Store. They looked at it, ran some diagnostics and told me to go home and re-install the OS. I put in the first disc went through the wizard, picked the options tab and selected archive and install. Everything was fine for the first 45 minutes. The time remaining kept increasing as the install progress increased. I thought this was a bit strange but I don't rely on the estimates much because they are usually wrong. I had to go out and before I left the dialog time said 11 hours and 13 minutes remaining. I thought that was rather long but left and now 4 hours later it seems to be stuck in the exact same spot. Should I abort and try again? Any ideas as to why this is happening? Is this normal since I did tell it to archive and there are a lot of files, music, video etc on the machine?

Any thoughts / advice is appreciated.

Hrrmmm . . . it coooooouuuullllddd be in that I had mine done by my Mac dealer who used his faster computer--he said that doing it direct from my disk would take a few hours.

However, with all due respect to the WONDERFUL Apple Store People on this Board, the recommendation to "you need to reinstall" is about as common as "let me sell you a new computer." I do not trust that.

The few times I have A and RI due to stupidity on my part on a slower Mac, it has not taken that long. BUT when I have had a hardware problem--like bad RAM--I have had all sorts of problems such as the thing crashing as I installed lower versions of 10--like 10.3.

If it is late in your area, you can let it run and see if it progresses. If not, you can try abort, but I would be concerned that you may have a hardware problem.

Best,

I let it run overnight and when I woke up it said there were errors and to try again. I'm going to give it one more try. If anyone has any other ideas I would appreciate it.
Thanks Doctor X for your reply.

You may just have had a bad attempt.

One thing to consider if it fails is to make sure your hardware is good.

Here is a nice FAQ Thread on how to do that. You will want to run that a long time.

If THAT comes clean and you still cannot Archive and Install, post your full specs, and the "Smart People" may be able to help you further.
