so here's the situation...

Got a 2007 macbook and decided to make an account on it that was the admin account. I put my new username in and then my password (which I just left blank). So that was easy. Then I downloaded something, like Firefox, but when I try to copy firefox over to the applications folder, it won't let me. it says I must authenticate the action. when I try putting in my username, it wont work. it also wont work with the admin. and when I go to settings and then accounts, I can't do anything there either because it won't let me without the u/n and p/w! it really sucks...

would really appreciate the help!

When you open your Accounts pref pane, you'll see a list of the users.
Does your present user show in that list as an admin account?
Does the new user that you just created also show as an admin account?

If you log out, are you allowed to log back in, and it accepts your account password at that time?
Authentication is required for many operations, if you are not presently logged in as an admin user.
If you have really messed up your permissions, I usually would suggest that you can reinstall your system.

But, you can also simply boot to your OS X installer DVD, and reset your password for each account, by choosing Reset Password from the Utilities menu. When you have completed that password reset, you don't need to continue with the reinstall - just restart your Mac. You will get a login screen, even if you have your system set for automatic login, so enter your new password, and that should work OK.

note - I don't recommend having ANY user, admin or not, with an empty password. I use certain software and utilities that don't act nicely with a blank password.
