Need: Long-Range Airport

Gnomo,

Thanks for the advice to not worry about FCC stuff. That sounds reasonable. And also about DSL sharing being parallel to cable theft. That also sounds reasonable.

(BTW, I am actually very pleased with my ISP (NO spam gets through, very reasonable pricing, and excellent customer service...basically, the dream-team ISP...), particularly considering that in my very rural environment my options are quite limited, and my ISP could get by with a lot worse service at a much higher price. So I would be a real pud to do anything to shaft them.)

Thanks for hanging in there with me, fellas.

Here's an update of sorts: I just am putting the finishing touches (reloading, checking software, etc.) on my "brain transplant" on my 2001 Dual USB iBook. That is, I just removed the stock 10GB HDD and plopped in a new 80GB wonder. What I want to do next is get an Airport card and finally go wireless (the reason behind this post). Only, I just realized today that I'll have to stick with 802.11b, which it looks like has a smaller range than 802.11g. Even Apple's optimistic marketing limits it to 150 feet, about 1/2 the distance I want to span...

What I'm getting from all your (plural; all y'all's) posts, however, is that I'll simply have to do some amount of trial-and-error with optional external antennas or bridging with extra routers in between. I'll try to report back when I can get around to this, which may be as long as 1-2 mos. away.
