get ATI 7500 or 8500 if you want to achieve Quartz Extreme (this is required in AGP mode not PCI but can be hacked with software called PCI Extreme 1.x)
If you get a new version of DVD Player that's older than 1.3 in Mac OS 9 then it will play because the 1.3 version required a hardware decoder that is on Rage 128

The last pci card made by ati was the radeon 7000, which is a decent card for your B&W. I had one in my old B&W before upgrading my system last year.
An even better choice would be the original ati radeon (pci version). Yes the 7000 has a little higher clock speed, but it didn't have the horsepower needed at higher resolutions for gaming and such.

The only problem is that they are not available new any more (unless someone has one leftover in inventory) so that would leave you looking for a used model.
As far as quartz extreme, there is a hack to enable it on pci macs. I've never tried it, but I've heard mixed reviews on how well it works.

I use PCI Extreme with my Radeon 7000 - it works fine. Do a search at www.macupdate.com or www.versiontracker.com - they both have a link to it.

I have a DVD-ROM from a Sawtooth in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, and the 7000 works with DVD Player.
