Need to back-up before upgrading?

I'm currently running OS 10.3.x on my G5. Have OS 10.4 on CD and would like to upgrade my OS to the latest version of OS 10.4

Is it essential to back-up all my data, applications etc before doing so?

Presumably my preferences, Safari bookmarks etc will not be deleted when upgrading?

Thanks for any advice.

It is essential to *ALWAYS* have a current backup of everything you do not wish to lose. It's not only that a system upgrade could hose your system. There are other things that can happen. Lightning strikes, harddrives die: You definitely _want_ to have a backup. Always.

To answer your question, upgrading your OS represents no special danger to your system. Damage to your system during an upgrade is more likely to be caused by a lightening strike, mechanical failure of your hard drive, etc. than the upgrade itself. Do periodic backups. Synchronize! Pro X will allow you to create bootable backups. However, the lack of a backup should not prevent your upgrading your system.
 
Have a back up, always recommended. But upgrading shouldn't normally erase your settings or files unless you "wipe and install" OS X.
