i just got a g5 quad (not bragging but smiling) BUT the dock disappears randomly - anyone seen this?? i can get it back by going to the dock pref but it won't automatically open

any suggestions?

Try trashing the com.apple.dock.plist located in User/Library/Preferences

Then restart.

thank you for the suggestions - having logged out and restarted a second time seems to have fixed the dock at least for the last two days so maybe i had a hiccup.

ill be monitoring and let you all know if it comes up again

thank you for the suggestions

Look for the line on the Dock. Close to the right, if you have your Dock on the bottom of the screen. Right-click or hold down the "control" key and click the mouse button (if your mouse has only one button). Make sure hiding is not on. If you have hiding on, you'll have to run your mouse to the very bottom of the screen to access the Dock. As soon as your mouse pointer leaves the Dock it will disappear again.

I had the same problem. The Dock would only appear when 'Hiding' was switched off. Also, the re-size ability was missing from the Dock (re-sizing by squeezing the Dock's dividing line). But I knew it wasn't the Dock preferences because it was happening on both of my bootable partitions. So what is common to both partitions? I figured that only the hardware was.

Sure enough, I unplugged the wireless receiver from the USB port and immediately put it back. Voila! The vanishing Dock was fixed.

I'll bet that your first correspondent has a wireless mouse and that he has unplugged it at some time and thought that trashing the preference file (as was suggested) did the trick.

Why it happens in the first place is another question, but I imagine it's the wireless (not Bluetooth) mouse.

hi tpd

i am the original poster with the dock problem - it did go away for a while but . . . it's back and yes i did have a wireless mouse but i stpped using it in favor of the apple mighty mouse - love that little scroll ball

anyway- i will try to delete the prefs for the old wireless and see if this cures it

That was quick, b-boy. You had your problem more than four years ago and yet it still persists? As I said, I don't think a preference file is affecting it. I booted from two different partitions and the problem was across both, using different sets of system files.

Just before typing this answer, it happened again! That's twice in two days. I removed the mouse's receiver dongle from the USB port, replaced it and the Dock returned properly. I'm starting to think that maybe my mouse battery is running down because I never switch it off. I'm using 10.4.8 and a Logitech mouse, which, by the way, scrolls sideways, too.
