network connections when a PowerBook sleeps

Hello All

I've noticed that when my PB goes to sleep (or, more critically, when I close the lid to walk around) I tend to lose the network connections on most of my networked apps.

Is there any way I can defeat or modify this behavior? Case in point - this PB exists in a mostly Unix environment where I spend most of my time running applications on remote Unix boxes with the display exported to my PB. Some of these apps/simulations take hours to run. I *need* to be able to close the lid on this thing (wireless), walk to a co-worker's office or meeting, re-open the lid and keep working. Hell, I can even do that in Linux on a Thinkpad!!!

Any help appreciated, or I'll need the X11 equivalent of screen(1) :(. Can't find anyway to modify this behavior in preferences. The requirement of keeping alive ssh and X connections is a must, bugger the battery life.

Thanks - JB

I'm such a newbie that I don't even have a Mac yet (PowerBook on order). But I stumbled across this in a FAQ Forum post and thought maybe it may help ...

there's also a utility called Sleepless. (sorry, don't have the link on me, but I'm sure you can find on version tracker or google) the advantage to sleepless is that you can have it turn your notebook display off, while the external runs. other options too.

I tried downloading the beta version of sleepless for my 10.4.8 intel MB but the closed lid operation still wont work. any ideas?

If you connect an external mouse, close the lid, then click the mouse, the computer should wake up while the lid is closed. I'm using my PowerBook now with the lid closed, on an external monitor.

I dont want to use it on a external monitor. Basically I want to be able to close my MB but it in my bag and reopen it in class without having to reconnect to the VPN. It would be nice to be able to play itunes without having to have it open also.

Simply using a mouse connected to it while the lid is closed will wake it up - no external display required.
