The Late: SuperMacMod
Using 10.2. Go to Server shows my PC (2000P).

Both machines on same network, Router and cable modem.

When click connect, get the following message;

Connecting to smb://192.168.1.101
An error has occurred (error = 5023).

Any help appreciated.

-5023 afpUserNotAuth _ _ _ _ AFP User not authorized

Check settings?
 
I am getting the same problem. I'm not familiar with the PC here, I have the same set up as you BOBW.

Could you explain how you solved this?

In Connect to Server;


Workgroupr/Domain - WORKGROUP/2000P My C drive is "2000P"

User name -

Password -

You can right click on your C drive or the folder you want to share to set Sharing up.

When I installed 2000P it was automatically named WORKGROUP
 
Ok, I've done that, selected ALLOW 10 users, and I still get he error on the Mac - any ideas?

The mac asks for the password - where do I find this?

Could this have something to do with it ?

Should be the password you gave the PC. Look in the Users Control Panel.
 
Hi thanks for your reply. I have looked at the USERS AND PASSWORDS on the PC. There is no tickbox next to "Users must entera user name ...." but I tried ticking it and also set a password as there didn't seem to be one. Still I get the same error. Even tried without a password and still the same.

My mind is going numb! I've triple-checked All the usernames and passwords on Both my Mac and PC and YET, Evertime I try to connect to server (my PC) the get the same, damn error 5000 (yes, I know what it means).
It all worked fine until I switched to a PPPoE-based DSL account. Everthing else seems to be networking just fine.
BTW, the username for me in connect to server is Always my short Mac name (unless I change it). Apples KB has been as helpful as a blind and deaf boyscout helping across a major freeway at rush hour (with me blindfolded).
 
You're trying to access a WINDOWS machine. So maybe you'll want to check WINDOWS' help or a MS centered forum?

Btw, you can also easily use some freeware FTP server on your Windows box and access it from your Mac via FTP (use Fetch, Transmit or any other FTP client on the Mac side).

You'll also want to check both computers' IP addresses. Maybe something's strange here. Does one of the computers use PPPoE or does your router use it?

It seems obvious that the issue is really how you're connected through the net. Can you try and disconnect your internet access and network the two computers only, using a private IP range?
 
Both machines are on the internet just fine. It's only connecting to each other that's the problem. And yes, only the router is running PPPoE (a lesson hard learned over the weekend, since neither Apple's KB, nor the Linksys website address this issue).
 
Yes, I BELIEVE you that both are on the net. But obviously, since you've installed that new connection, something went wrong or is going wrong. That's why I've asked you to try and network the two computers without the internet connection, by using a private IP range.

The target of trying this is to see where the problem actually resides. If you can connect to your Windows machine using a private IP network without an internet connection, then you can safely say that your problem is connected to the PPPoE router or ISP.
 
Well, in lieu of trying to establish a direct, computer to computer connection, I pinged instead. It was then that I realized I had assigned the PC the Network IP address (0). Soon as I fixed that, all was well with the universe (for now, at least).
