Network problems

Hey guys, I seem to be constantly disconnected from the Internet at irregular times, sometimes as when idle from my computer. I get disconnected from MSN and also any other activities like ftp downloading and what have you. I also have a router/firewall running, a d-link DI-524. Any ideas or any options I need to edit to get this working? I already allow activity through port 20-21 for ftp, and also 1863 for MSN...also 6891-6900 for msn file transfer. Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Thanks in advanced!

Check on your routers webinterface if there is a disconnect after a certain idle time. And also check the log file on your dlink router. You will see why (or if) your connection was disconnected. Maybe it's a problem of your ISP.

Yea, I checked the Router logs, and everything seems fine. I'm pretty sure its a problem with OS X because I have a laptop and a PC hooked up to the router as well and have absolutely no problems.

EDIT- and no, its not dialup, its broadband.

What do you mean with "everything seems fine". Are there any wan disconnects or is it just the connection between your mac and the router that seems to be disturbed? What when you try to ping your router? Any problems?

I just get disconnected from the Internet, and get automatically reconnected. Like when I lose my connection on MSN, I'm able to sign in to MSN again right away.

yep, i too am using the d-link di-524 wireless router and it just stops broadcasting at random intervals. i'm on a 15" powerbook and it seems to work fine on other wireless networks. my roomates hp laptop doesn't get cut off randomly like i do. it's strange it's been doing it for a while now. ALSO, i can be up to 3 feet away from the router and, in my stumbler, all i can get is about 55% signal... from three feet away. it USED to work across the house no problem then one day, i started to get dropped randomly and the signal has weakened tremendously... it's broadcasting at 100% too.

the router's configured correctly, this just doesn't make sense at all... i'm on broadband too.

suggestions?

maybe i should just get a linksys...

When the router is disconnecting the WAN connection (internet connection) it can be either a problem with the router or an ISP or broadband modem problem. Try to directly plug your mac to the broadband modem and see if the connection is consistent. If so, then your router seems to cause the troubles. Make sure you have the most current dl-524 firmware installed.

i have the most recent firmware and the cable connection is fine. i think i'll just get a new wireless router from linksys. they seem much more reliable from what i've read. thanks for the advice.

fieldofgravity, before you end up with a new router and the same problem, did you plug your mac directly to the cable modem and test the connection? In many cases the ISP is causing most of the problems.
