Networking - Advanced. enet / airport.

Hello. I really hope i can get some help with this one.

i have my windows pc networked with my macbook pro.

i have a standard cat 5 ethernet cable running between them.
when i connect to my PC from my mac (i use the "Connect to server" method) i can always connect just fine.

however. this is where it gets tricky.

when i have the airport running, and both my pc and mac are on the same internet, it networks wirelessly using the airport.

when i have the airport turned off. and the cable is running between the two computers, i can still connect to my pc. only it is at least 10 times faster a connection. much faster.

basically, even when i have the cable connected between the two computers, if my macs airport is on, and i connect to my pc it connects over the airport. and.. well is a lot slower.

HOWEVER,,, if i turn the airport off.. then connect to the pc (with the cable plugged in) THEN turn my airport on to get internet.. it still keeps the connection to the pc over the cable and is faster.

question. IS THERE anyway to set it so i dont have to do this work around. so that it knows to look for the cable connection before it looks for the airport?

also.. it is just a standard cable. not a crossover.. just a normal old ethernet cable.. 10/100 or whatever the standard is.

thanks.

Crossover cables are becoming less important these days, I think most relatively recent network cards will auto-detect whether a cable is crossover or not.

While I don't have a specific setup where I can test the network setup you want, I think it's simply a matter of adding a static route on your Mac. With this, connections made from Mac to PC should use your ethernet interface (en0) instead of the wireles (en1). The "route" command will let you do this. Substitute the IP address below with the IP address assigned to your PC's ethernet card.

Code:
sudo route add -host 192.1678.1.2 -interface en0
