Networking Between Os X(10.4) And Windows 2000 Server

We are having a rather large network consisting several Mac's and Windows machines including 2 Windows 2000 Server's. Now we have a lot of Mac OS 9 and several OS X machines. We are expiriencing that the OS X clients are close to 20 times slower then the OS 9 when it comes to network response, it goes for both Quark and the search function in Finder

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It would be useful to describe your network protocol on your Win 2000 servers and how your Mac clients are accessing them.
