Networking Filemaker & Internet Problem

I'm running a small network(5 computers) with a ethernet router using tcp/ip and Filemaker5.5. The problem is I cannot access the internet and share files at the same time from the host or any remote. If I'm already connected to filemaker and try and connect to internet, it will connect but not load a page. Is my connection being routed to the router? If I use a modem fax when connected to filemaker, I have no problem. Stumped.?!

Maybe give some more details of your net setup. The router provides a firewall, so none of the computers have a firewall active, right?

I am using just a modem to connect to the internet via direct phone connection. When I'm not in Filemaker sharing at any terminal or host I can connect to the internet without any problem. It is when I am in Filemaker/sharing mode that I can connect but no pages will load. The internet connection shows that I am connected but browser reports that it cannot load site. Is the router pulling my connection through the sharing mode? Is used to use Appletalk in OS 9 to share Filemaker. Now Is use TCP/IP. Could this be the problem?

I'm not sharing internet. I'm just trying to use the connection to the internet as a standalone. Not routeing it through the network. Or at least not wanting to. I have ethernt loading first in Network preferences. I've tried it both ways. Setup is Host to router and router branched out to 4 others. Don't know of any settings more than just configuring each computer to share files within Filemaker.

So you have all the ethernet connectors going to the same peer/local ports and none to a WAN/internet connector? And the router features like DHCP server are off?

It sounds like you've got your one "host" computer connected to the router through the WAN port and the rest of the computers connected to the LAN ports -- right? That would prevent you from connecting to the internet while you're using some other form of TCP/IP.

Try connecting ALL the computers to the LAN ports on the router. A router is specifically for "routing" data, and a computer should not be connected to the WAN port for a simple home network.

I think your needs would necessitate the use of a hub or a switch, not a router.

No, that's not it. I double checked that to make sure. The WAN port is open. The thing that gets me is when I was under OS9 , I could use the internetand share files at the same time on the host. Is it because of TCP/IP?

Ya, this is doable but needs to be setup right. I guess you need to tell us everything that's in your Network Prefs setup.
