Networking under Panther

Am I missing something? I feel that Panther has taken a step backward from Jaguar in the way it handles server connection. Here is a handy feature that worked fine in Jaguar and doesn't seem to work in 10.3.6:
1. I browse the network, find my laptop and connect to it.
2. I drag the laptop's icon to the right hand side of the dock.
3. I dismount (eject) the laptop.
4. When I want to reconnect, I just click on the laptop's icon in the dock.

It works fine till I restart. After that, the dock icon reports that the alias is no longer connected.

I also tried making an alias of the laptop, but it too seems to "expire" upon restart.

Also, while I'm complaining, the Connect to Server window now shows numeric identifications of servers, while under Jaguar, the same feature showed disk names.

Is there some Panther way to accomplish the same things?

you can copy your laptop on your desktop or in a folder, you'll find an alias. you can also select to add to your keychain the username and password... then bring the alias to the right part of the dock, in my case it's working.
