New disk icon after update.

I'm running 10.8.3. I updated from 10.8.2 about 10 days ago when the App Store told me it was available. I followed the few directions and it did its thing and rebooted. When it was all over, along with all my usual junk, there was a new disk icon on my desktop: BOOT OSX. The contents looked like a very bare bootable system, perhaps for recovery or whatever.

Anyhow, I did a "safe" reboot, followed by a normal reboot, and the icon was gone. What was that thing?
 
Sounds like the recovery partition. It's normal, although it shouldn't have shown up on the desktop like that.
Probably just a glitch. Not something you want to mess with as you might need it someday.
