New Flat Panel Line?

I recall reading on a few other Mac news sites about Apple's plans to release a new series of flat panels to go along with the metal theme of the G5s sometime around November, or so.

Has anyone else heard this, and are there any reliable sources that can substaniate?

Thanks,

J

There are always goofy rumors flying around the web. I hear apple is gonna release a 30" cinema display - and as tight as that would be, and don't get me wrong - it's feasible to, but some rumors are just a lot of baloney. Ever heard of piles?

Yeah, I totally hear that. Although it doesn't seem totally unsound for them to get something out to market on the heals of the G5 design theme, and the upcoming holiday season. Personally I've been holding out till the G5s shipped with panther to get an entire new rig (monitor, et al). But If I wait another couple weeks to find out if the rumors are true...that's just a few more weeks of interest in the bank, and that's not so bad either.

The 23" is a beauty - but when you get it just imagine how much bigger and more beautiful a 30" would be. I found myself almost crying at the discrepancy between my 15" iMac CRT and the 23" one night at a local apple store. My friend has an iMac like mine and his Dad has a 17" beaut and putting those to side by side you can really tell that an LCD is way better then a CRT. I can't wait to get my college powerbook G5 in 1 or 2 years!

You guys think Apple will release monitors with aluminum in the casing, or with something else? Rebar perhaps...

Rebar…interesting concept.

By the way K, I felt your pain when I bought a brand new B&W G3 many years back, and sure enough a few months later...they introduce the G4

It would make sense for them to have design/product consistency throughout their product line. They did it shortly after they introduced the G3 and G4 lines. The current flat panels have somewhat yet apple generic (for lack of a better phrase), design cues.

Anyway, I'm hoping they'll do something soon. Like anyone else I'd rather have the latest stuff with consideration that it will last as long as my current rig has.

On a side note, they better make it quick. My machine knows and is performing a work slowdown. It knows!

i dont think piles.. was a pile of shit..

maybe they tried it and decided to leave it for 10.4.... maybe i wasnt good enough... or maybe it was just useless..

but i think it has been patented... and maybe it may show up in later osx. versions :)

Some rumors are taken from out of space, some become true.
Who can say for sure.

One thing I have thought of, really, is the Apple monitors....they are beautiful as they are right now but...since when were they updated compared to all the other hardware the latest years?

Just a thought, ya know ;)

Let's say this: It wouldn't suprise me at all if new monitors will get an "uplift" in the near future (interprete "near" as you wish).

It was patented a long time ago in the dark ages of Classic Mac OS. However, the concept has something. And already _having_ the patent for it might at least let Apple try it out in software. The idea, I think, is great.

But that's quite off-topic. I think aluminum will be the case material for the displays, as that fits both the PowerBooks and the PowerMacs well.

Really? Aluminum? Hmmm, dunno about that.
Mabye, I mean, Apple *can* produce miracles when it comes to design.
Logically speaking aluminium would be the choice to go for but...

Ah, well, better than black!

I say aluminum in reference to look, not actual material.

The rumors had talked about that, as well as smaller bezel design, lighter weight overall, better image quality...blah, blah.

Probably just a matter of when at this point. Who knows???

aluminium screens.. now that would be interestin...

and if im not mistaken. they will be the first aluminium casing flat panel displays.. he he

actually... wasn't the 12" and 17" powerbook the first flat panel in aluminum casing?? :p

I expect new dimensions...
16/9 17" (same screen as iMac and PB 17") for small size desks (same width as the Apple keyboard).
20"
23"
giant (30 ???)

For the color, I don't know... the keyboard and the mouse are still white.

That's pretty much the speculation. I've heard 30 a while back and that Apple was sourcing out a manufacturer on this. Makes you wonder how the new line and price structure will offset the older models. This is what I am eagerly waiting for before I invest in a whole new system. I've waited long enough, end of the year deadline to buy isn't that much more to wait.
