New "Hard Drive Update" in System Update

Just noticed this one in SU today:

Hard Drive Update 1.0:

The Hard Disk Update improves the longevity of some hard drives. Your drives may or may not need to have firmware updated; installing and running this update will tell you if updating is required.

It then goes on to warn about the update potentially rendering the drive unbootable, bringing on armegeddon, etc., and that I should be "prepared".

Any idea what this update's all about?

Let me know when you guys do it, I'll let you have a new drive at a discount :)

Maybe they've just discovered that something in OSX eats hard drives and panicked this 'update' out to cure it.:D

Heh - shouldn't even joke about that, the thought turns my spine to jelly!

This update is for Mac OS 9.x and for some PowerMac models... More info here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120230

Also, there is an update for OS X.x here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120231

Here is a piece from there (OS 9 version --the OS X versions is 99% the same :D ):
"The Hard Drive Update 1 improves the longevity of some hard drives shipped in certain Power Mac G4 computers...
...Most drives do not need this update. You can check the drives in your computer by running this update. If the update is needed, a message will appear which says that "one or more hard drives in your system need updated firmware.""

I took the plunge.

I've got a G4 AGP and the hard drive must have qualified.

As far as "after shock" it might be my imagination, but I haven't heard my hard drive spinning as often.

It probably just sets the sleep mode to a little sooner that previously set on the hard drive.

I accidently ran this on my G3 and now my HD is toast. It's happened twice now so I'm pretty positive that it is the HD updater. :(
