i don't have too much experence with HD let alone PB HD's. but i think to format that drive, just plug it in, start from the OS 9 CD run drive setup (? it's in one of the programes in the utility folder) ithink it is drive setup. then you initalize the new HD and install 9 and/or 10

like i said i am a newb to HDs

To boot from your system cd, hold down the C key on the keyboard with the cd in the drive as you start your Powerbook. You should be able to run the disk utility and format the hard drive. Install OS 9 first, then install OS X.

** I do have to mention that I've never installed the OS to a bare hard drive on a Mac. I have booted from a cd using the directions above and I did install OS X over OS 9. It was easy.

[Edit: Update--Just recently, I did have the opportunity to install Mac OS 9 and X on to a bare drive. No problem.]

Good luck!

After adding the disclaimer that I never installed Mac OS on to a blank drive, I just installed OS 9 and X on a mac with a new hard drive.

I Installed 9.1 first, then 9.2 update, then 10.0.3, then 10.1 update. It took awhile, but the process was friendly.
