new iBook vs. powerbook

Hi

Could someone with some experience recommend which would be better, new iBook 1Ghz or powerbook 12' 1Ghz?

I'm looking at the specs from Apple's site and there's not much difference. Who could explain the gap in their pricetag?

Thanks in advance

The iBook 1 Ghz comes as
( 1GHz PowerPC G4, 256K L2 cache @ 1GHz, 14-inch TFT 1024x768 resolution, 256MB DDR266 SDRAM, 60GB Ultra ATA drive, Combo Drive, ATI Mob Radeon 9200, 32MB DDR video memory) vs the Powerbook .. (did you plan combo or superdrive?)

- The 1024x768 is the max supported resolution for iBook.
- You can't use 2 monitors on the same time (you can with powerbook)
- max. RAM is 640 mb (powerbook can hold 1,25 Gb)
- Combo drive (powerbook has superdrive.. superdrive burns dvds); no superdrive as ibook standard options (you could change it afterwards, but that'd break the warranty)
- Powerbook 12" comes with 40 gb hd (as standard) but upgrading that to 60 or 80 gb is a lot cheaper than trying to upgrade the ibook
- aluminium looks .. more professional.

Powerbook is more upgradeable. Would the laptop be your primary or secondary computer? ::angel::

My brother has the 12inch alubook and it is extremely robust. The performance is great. What else would be needed? I have an ibook 12inch, which has the same case like the G4 ibooks. It doesn't feel that robust and it's darn sensitive when it comes to scratches. I would suggest you to pick the powerbook. Once the G3 had a significant advantage on battery duration and heat to the G4 powerbooks. Since they are on G4 now, there is no reason beside the cost that makes the ibook the better choice (if you ask me).

The puter is going to my dad...

I have an iMac and a 12' powerbook (1st gen) myself. I just noticed that Apple upgraded the iBook line and it's getting almost even with the cheapest pb. My dad has two iMacs (the original and a flat one) so this is going to be the secondary computer. It is mainly used for semi-professional audio and midi work.

My first recommendation was the powerbook and I still think that it would work best for him.

Most of the facts giaguara mentioned, I already knew, but some were new to me. The superdrive is not needed but the 640 mb memory limit for iBook is a bit low...

.. if you consider he'll have the pornwerbook for hte next 3-4 years in use maybe, the ability to have 1,25 gb ram one day sounds very good, doesn't it? semi-professional work > the pornwerbook look will impress more than the ibook look, eh? ;)

I have the latest iBook G4, even though I like it, the PowerBook is probably your better bet. Apple improved much over the previous models. It works fawlessly, and is responsive. I recently upgraded to a new Powermac 1ghz, and felt the powerbook would be a duplicate. I need something portable, so basic word processing, spread sheet. The iBook fit.
Just my two cents

Just a note - even though the iBook does not support an extended desktop and higher resolutions on an external display out of the box, it is very easy (well, with an Applescript or instructions ;)) to enable this functionality on iBooks (and current iMacs and eMacs). It won't even void your warranty because zapping the PRAM will put things back to normal... http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html
