Hey, you can't expect Apple to put 32 megs of video memory into the TiBooks and iBooks. Maybe the next TiBooks will really rock the house with 64 vram and the iBooks will have 32
Apple did the same thing with the TiBook. It did a two-tiered upgrade scheme for the graphics card. It went from the Rage 128 Mobility to the Radeon Mobility (now in the new iBook) to the Radeon 7500 Mobility. Previous TiBooks are still pretty recent, but don't meet the QE requirements/recommendations.
Apple will do the same thing with the iBook. I'll bet you it'll be before Jaguar comes out with a Radeon 7500 Mobility. That way, the iBook will be ready for Quartz Extreme.
Remember, Jaguar is not out yet, so Apple doesn't really need to "support" it in current machines. It's kind of annoying, but hey, that's the way it goes..
The plus side of all this QE requirement crap is that we'll see some serious stepping up in graphics cards in most of the models, so they can safely meet the demands of Quartz Extreme. So people buying in about 6 months will have a blast
Hey, I noticed that the new iBook comes with Otto Matic and *gasp* Deimos Rising, as well as PCalc! That's so cool! Apple is now bundling Ambrosia Software on most (if not all) Macs, and I'm glad to see that Apple is embracing third-party software.
The new iBooks do support Quartz Extreme. Apple states that 32MB of VRAM is recommend for optimum performance, but actually it's not the amount of VRAM that's important. It's the chipset (the ATI Radeon is supported), and the bus (AGP 2X or higher is required)....
So yes, the new iBook will support Quartz Extreme. It won't benefit from it as much as the PBG4, but it will still benefit from it.
