New Mac update 10.4.8 wont boot... please help!

I've been running 0S 10.4 on my Powerbook Titanium (PowerPC / 667mhz / 512MB). Have just installed 0S 10.4.8 update via Apple>Software Update. Everything installed fine until re-boot, now the machine stalls when i get passed the username password bit... the desktop starts to load but i only get half an inch of the finder menu bar display (the bit top right with the 'spotlight' icon) and nothing else. A blank desktop.

The machine boots fine in 'safe-mode' and i've tried running the fsck process and the hard-drive seems to be fine. When i re-start in normal mode the problem persists. Only a blank desktop and the Spotlight icon appear.

Any ideas what's going on here?

Try to download the combo updater from apple.com for 10.4.8 and install it when booted into safe mode.
