The general rule for me is wait until the NEXT version of anything comes out before you jump in. For example, remember when Mac OSX first came out? People were jumping in and then realizing they had to upgrade all their programs and some programs did not exist in "aqua-ed" format so they were a bit screwed.
The G5, sure it's fast, but it's NOT AVAILABLE YET which is your biggest concern of all. There's no telling how long you will wait because there are already 100,000 of them on pre-order that have to be served first before they get to you.
I agree with the G4 Tower option (not the iMac, even though I have one.) If you want expandability and DEPENDABILITY then the G4 is tried, tested and true. As another poster mentioned this model is very expandable and upgradable.
The other thing to consider with the G5, and as has been mentioned in other threads on macosx.com, is that some programs will not work with the G5's new architecture. Virtual PC 6.0 will not work on the G5. It's not clear yet to me how many other programs will need to be re-engineered to work on G5.
Go with the G4.
