new Mail app

I think there is little discussion: Apple Mail app is the easiest to use mail application available on any machine.

But it is slightly limited. If you have several accounts, some POP, some IMAP.... several output servers, some with identification, some without... then you will find Mail too limited.

I love the versatility of Mozilla Mail (www.mozilla.org), and now (0.9.6+) it is much faster that previous version. But it is still much more difficult to set up than Mail, and not preset for iTool Mac mail.

Why not imagine that the next version of Apple Mail will be based on Mozilla Mail ?

Why is it limited for several accounts with different setups. I use mine for 1 pop, 2 imap all on different servers with different ids. this is very simple to set up. each account is configured entirely seperately. i can check all or any of them as i please. i'm sorry chevy, but i don't understand your question or comment unless you've reached some max number of accounts that i haven't imagined anyone needing to do.

My only gripe with Mail is the usability of the spell checker - reminds me of a Microsoft app - "Check Spelling" what the hell does it do? Seems like it should do what "Spelling" does? Apple always had really nice spell checkers in ClarisWorks and AppleWorks - why dump all that good work on Mail?

P.S. The thesaurus in Claris/Appleworks was always superior to Word - many more word choices, more appropriate choices and even had an thesaurus entry for "thesaurus" - something Word did not last time I checked. I'm still waiting for SpellChecker for OS X.

There's a "Check Spelling While You Type" setting (only available in Cocoa applications), which puts red dotted lines under misspelled words much like Word does. You can also uncheck this, and the "Spelling" menu item brings up the little dialog much like AppleWorks' that checks the document and suggests words in the dialog itself. The "Check Spelling" menu item seems to highlight the first misspelled word.

One thing that some people seem to miss: you can control click on red-dotted-underlined words, and the contextual menu item pops up with all of the suggestions that the regular spelling box would suggest, along with the regular "Ignore Spelling" and "Learn Spelling" menu options. I much prefer it this way. It seems the dictionary is still as high quality as it was in AppleWorks.

When you have a contact in Mail, how many different email addresses can that contact have? how many addresses, fax numbers, etc.

My meaning of limited for mail would be more in regard to contacts vs. accounts, etc.

If apple made contact info more powerful it would be awesome and easy. For now and for me, it is limited. I'll keep using Entourage v.X.

"The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck is the day they start making vacuum cleaners.

How about turkey basters?

Seriously, I'll check into this - I just liked the way the old apple app spell checkers worked.

kcmac, in address book i count 28 seperate fields available for contact info. at least 4 of these are customizable as far as i can tell. how much more info could you need than 28 entries? and of course by simply creating a second contact for same person ( person, person1) you then have 56 possiblities. of course i am not in business and would guess that mail was never meant to handle large business demands. i just know i have been looking at other mail apps and i have found none so far that offer enough advantage to pay for, given how i use my mail. some even seem to be a step backwards. actually i always used a small developer's mail app in 9, but found osx mail to be so functional that i now use it. i wish it downloaded a little faster sometimes, but that's not a big deal to me. documant matching & cache loading on imap servers seems to take the longest.

I explain my message:

I have 4 accounts: one at Netscape (i use it very little), one at mac.com (my main account), one at my provider (historically my second account... I don't use it for current mail and 99% of what I receive on that box is crap... some of my friend still use it), and one at work. My provider only provides POP, all others are IMAP. As I like to receive the mail back on the same account, I also use 3 different smtp for sending mail, one for each receive accounts but the work one as this one doesn't forward messages.

I tried to do that with Mail but I never succeeded to have all accounts accepted. I had most problems with the one at work. With Mozilla, it usually works (not always).

chevy, that's interesting because with three i never have a problem with that. I mean i have times when no mail goes thru to one or another because of things on their end, but that usually resolves in a short while. i've never added my netscape mail to it. that's where i send all the crap i can and only check it once or twice a month. maybe i will play with adding that to the mix and see what happens & get back. might take a day or two. I will say that when i first started using mail, there were posts that didn't come thru that netscape mail app picked up, but that issue seems to have resolved since 10.1.1. now when i double check them, they are the same.

Maybe that's a 10.1.1 thing: I still use 10.1

Or that may be something special with the server that is installed where I work. I'm no software specialist.

Ed,
Don't get me wrong here. I converted my mom to OSX and she loves Mail. My wife and kids love Mail. I love mail....only not at work. It just cannot do it....yet.

I don't use even close to all of Entourage's potential but I find that right now, it is way ahead of Mail for business...again, revolving around contacts.

I am hoping that Apple intends to close this gap somewhat but I believe that what Mail really signals is that Microsoft will not be releasing another free version of Outlook Express soon, if ever.

I have not yet gone to mail.app.
I find entourage more to my tastes for the moment. Once I can figure out how I can manage my 10 email accounts and my big addressbook in mail.app I will move.

One thing that peeves me is that the newton cant sync with mail.app like it can with entourage. No one has written an app for it yet

I want to be able to sync contacts dammit ;)

yeah, I can't get my Commodore VIC-20 to sync with my Ti/500 running Mail.app either... I know, I know, it was discontinued like 17 years ago and have ZERO reason to expect it to work, but I like to bitch anyway.

That is why I don't use Mail.app.

:D

how drole :p
Its still amazing that someone chose to do entourage syncing with teh newton but not mail.app :p

And cocoa apps are the way to go!
I don't really like the icons in the toolbar, though.
Is there any way to change icons in cocoa apps toolbars?
That would be sweet.

hey lonny fearless - about that ginko. i downloaded it but am afraid to install it with all the warnings they give. basically they say be careful - we may delete or destroy all your previous mail. I take you have tried it, being fearless and all, so have you had any problems yet? please share no matter how small they may be. my mail is one of the few things i want to absolutely protect.

...as I am, I installed it.
Had no problems with my mailboxes at all.
It works great! But you can back up your data if you want to feel safe.
It's easy to make copies of your mailboxes, you find them here:
/users/xxx/library/mail

BTW, LegomenRiot is my favourite one! ;-)

ok, thanks. i'll try and give it a shot.

file on my drive is Lonny_-_Lonny_Le...riot.mp3 so that must be the one i listened to and liked. :)
