Thanks for the greeting, Scott -- didn't find the new member place to introduce myself but this one has the word "Cafe" in it so will start here.
(No, the link didn't work).
I Googled for information about word processing or text software for Macs and came across this site. How I need it and have wished there was such a place!
I am SO grateful to find an interactive board that won't treat me like the dummy I am. I just want to learn.
Would love to hear readers' preferences for making files. I hate the Word one for macs; not sure if Appleworks has improved or if there is something in between. I am stuck with files on two comuters of which neither can read the other. Thanks again, 3kitty

Welcome,
As you have discovered all ready, this is a great community, with extremely knowledgeable people.
In regards to word processing on the Mac, there are several options. Appleworks has not been updated for some time, although I find it is useful for light word processing.

You mentioned Word, and of course that is probably the most widely used processor both on Windows and Mac. I find, a love hate relationship with office products.

Mellel is another word processor, that works well, and has some great features, streamlined and responsive.

Mariner Write, in my opinion is a close match to AppleWorks. The word processor is not bloated up with rarely used features.

There is also Nisus Write, although I have not used it recently, you may want to check it out.

Office replacement, there is ThinkFree Office.

You might want to experiment with these products to see what you prefer.

Thanks Scott for these titles I've not heard about. I have liked Appleworks on my ibook except the fraction thing (I love to save recipes) and am I the only person who doesn't like page lines between pages? No options? Is there one that meets that criteria but not Word which has too many bells and whistles for my use.
And how can I try these without actually buying them or ? I know I need to add memory to this older Mac4 and put on it another word type program. Am using textedit temporarily but hate its determination to save both files when I add something. It is nice to have pictures on some files though.

Another problem is this computer goes offline whenever it wants -- how do you determine if it's the older phone line or modem going? Took it up to the ISP and it ran there 45 min okay though he checked something and said it lost a bit of data which would probably have knocked down a PC. So downloading much isn't a great option right now either -- iffy. Please tell me where to go with the many issues I have right now (and there goes the connection again). I am so missing the ibook. 3kitty
