New OS X user having trouble - desktop disappearing.

Has anyone experienced this phenomena? My system boots up correctly but the desktop is blank. I realize that I should reinstall the software, but I need to save via my backup external firewire drive..... And since it doesn't show up, I don't know how to access it...

Suggestions? Answers? Please help the village idiot...

Does you dock show up? If so click on the finder icon. maybe it didn't launch. Otherwise hit apple+n Then click on the computer icon. Maybe you stuff just isn't appearing on the desktop.
