Hello all,

Anyone here know if the new PowerBook G4 1.25GHz laptops are OS 9 bootable? We haven't migrated to X yet and need a laptop solution for one of our departments.

Thanks!

No, not OS 9 bootable. There's only one model left from Apple that will still boot into OS 9 (G4 1.25 Ghz tower) Can you use Classic instead?

the new powerbooks come with x and 9.2 preinstalled. is 9.2 (classic) what would do for your department?

Lamentably no. I'm prepping Panther for full deployment in January, but they need it now and need it to be OS 9 bootable.

Of course, once I have a response on how to get Panther to print properly via Open Directory printing, I'll have more ammo to throw out there with moving us over faster.

A used one might, but I don't think any of the iBooks sold this year have had OS 9 bootability.

I am surprised why OS9 won't boot on new powerbooks anymore. Is it because apple delivers just a classic-reduced version of OS9 which is unbootable or is there some BIOS-add (or something like that) that doesn't allow OS9 anymore?
If it is just a matter of the bundle OS9, than I would rather go for the "full" one.
I don't really believe there is a hardware-thing...

I believe they modified the firmware. The computers are still capable of booting into OS 9, but they can't because of the firmware.

If the system can't boot into 9 because of the firmware, then they are not capable of booting into 9, period. Classic is going to remain an option for older software, but an actual bootup into OS 9 cannot be done. Previous eMacs will boot into 9, present models will not, but have Classic mode available (not a 'downgraded OS 9' AFAIK, all the software pieces are there, but the hardware won't allow boot to 9)
Where have you folks been the last few months while Apple continues to announce 'Won't boot to OS 9, but you can continue to use your older software in the Classic environment' yes, even the eMac is listed with the same words "Need to use your Mac OS 9 software as well? The eMac lets you do that, too, running all your Mac OS 9 applications in Mac OS X Classic mode." straight from the Apple eMac tech specs page.
It's a firmware change, believe it.

Well, than there should be a firmware hack out there allowing you to boot into OS9, right? Buying an eMac just to run OS9 natively and not in classic mode is somehow poor..

I stand corrected, the iBook G3 models are still available through the Apple Store, and still will boot into OS 9. (3 models of iBook G3, and 3 G4 tower models, both single and dual processor, at the AppleStore) That's it, no PowerBooks (or iMacs, or eMacs)...
Has anyone seen any firmware hacks that provide booting into OS 9?? Firmware hacks are a very risky undertaking...
