New RAM problem

Greetings, Just tired to install some RAM in my older G5 Dual 2 Ghz. Was very careful re: static, etc., but upon restarting, the computer did not kick into its boot cycle, and the LED above the power button just glowed more strongly on about a 4 second cycle.
Called AppleCare, and they had me reset the PMU reset button on the mother board, to no avail. Now the LED just comes on at about the same 4 second cycle (before it stayed on and just glowed more strongly). I've tried using just the old RAM, and just the new, with PMU resets.
Same result each time - just a blinking LED above the power button, about every 4 seconds.
Anyone know what has happened?

Actually, I've only 4 slots, and if only two are used, they must be the inner two, where I now have the original RAM. What I tried to install appears to be the correct RAM: DDR, 184 pin.
